Social Studies Dramatizations

Our current Social Studies unit was about the diverse people of the west. The class made dramatizations to share with the class. We were assigned groups and different people that were going west in the 1800s such as the Mexicanos, Nez Perce, the Pioneers, the 49ers, Chinese Immigrants, and the Mormons. Each person in the group was assigned a part in the dramatization: Historian, Director, Host, and Set Designer. The group would call up at least 4 people from the audience to be a part of the play. An example is the 49ers used a sluice (sloo) to mine gold. The dramatization group that was the 49ers acted out mining gold with the sluice (sloo).

Reminders: Halloween parade at 3:00 tomorrow.
No Current Events this week or the next
                   Book orders due tomorrow

Iowa Assessments Week

We are reminding you that Iowa Assessments are this week. Make sure to be prepared everyday by getting enough rest and eating a good breakfast everyday.
In our homeroom class we are doing some interesting experiments in our weather unit.  One of the experiments was trying to get cold water up to 30 degrees and by not mixing it with the hot water. Another one was about uneven heating; we went outside to the front patio for thirty minutes and every three minutes we would take the temperature for water and soil. After fifteen minutes we put them both into the shade. After we looked back at the results and we found out that water kept the heat in much longer than the soil. Although the soil got up to much higher heat it got out much faster.
In our social studies class we are learning about slavery and how the slaves were traded from West Africa then they took the Middle Passage when they made it to the U.S.A, they were sold at auctions or scrambles. Although four out of every ten slaves died on the way to U.S.A.

Our Trip to the State's Hygienic Lab

On Wednesday we went to the State Hygienic Lab. We went on an tour of the lab,
In Microbiology we learned that they do tests about what the hospital sends them. Things they test are tuberculosis, salmonella, rabies, and other things.
In Limnology we learned that they make sure the water is clean for the animals.
In Molecular Virology we learned that they test newborn babies for Bubble Boy Syndrome.
In Environmental Microbiology we learned that they test the city's water to make sure that it's clean with no bacteria. The way they do it is putting food in the water for the bacteria. If the water turns yellow it has bacteria in it, but if the water does not turn yellow it's safe. In DNA Extraction we learned to extract DNA from strawberries by squashing it all up and getting all the juice put into little containers then pouring cold alcohol on the squished strawberries. After that the DNA will settle on top of the strawberry. In Zombies we learned that if you don't wash your hands regularly you will turn into a zombie [ you will get sick].

Below are some pictures of our Zombie Apocalypse Lab and Strawberry DNA Lab.  We had a wonderful time and thank all of the people who volunteered their time to help make our visit memorable.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Johnson's 5th and 6th Graders

Blue Zone

Blue Zone is an organization that is partnering with a lot of communities to try and help people live healthier lives. Our school is trying to become a Blue Zone designated school by having kids be more active, more healthy, and not be on their screens all the time. Some of the things we are doing are the Sharing Bowl, the Walking School Bus, and our Blue Zone challenge sheets. The Sharing Bowl is a place where kids can put some of their food is they are not hungry during lunch. Then other kids can take the food and eat it. The Walking School Bus is where kids pick up other kids and they walk to school together. The Blue Zone challenge sheets are for kids to write down what they did in different categories of healthy things. In the category of fruits and vegetables, the recommended amounts are 5-9 servings per day. In the the exercise category, the ideal time is 60 minutes per day. In the breakfast category, they say you should eat it every morning. In the screen time, they want you to watch less than 60 minutes a day. In the sugary drinks category, they want you to drink zero.  Each week, our class is setting personal and class goals for our Blue Zone challenge sheets and trying to increase our minutes of daily exercise and intake of fruits and vegetables, while decreasing our daily amounts of screen time and sugary drinks.

Below are some pictures of our Blue Zone challenge sheets, and some Blue Zone posters that we made and shared with younger classes at our school.

Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Johnson's 5th and 6th Graders

Hearts and Pancakes

Today the school split up by grade level to have Pancake Day. The reason why we do this event is because today was Abe Lincoln's birthday. We have pancakes because it was his favorite food to eat. For the pancakes the kids use an old recipe close to what Abe might have used. Thanks to the amazing parent volunteers each kid got to have 1 or 2 pancakes. It was loads of fun to do this!

We will  also have a Valentines party tomorrow. We will deliver our Valentines (if we haven't yet,) to each of our classmates! Then we get to see what we got in our bags that we decorated. We will also get to play games. It will be lots of fun!

 Sincerely,
 Mrs.Johnson's 5th and 6th Graders

*Wear red, pink, or purple tomorrow

Martin Luther King Day

On Martin Luther King Day, we made decorations to honor Martin Luther King Jr. As a class, we made a drawing of Earth with drawings of us around the outside ring. Above the drawings were self-written way of how we want to one day change the world. As a school, each class made decorations on their classroom door. In social studies, we watched a documentary on Dr. King's life. It showed us several things about him we hadn't known before. In language arts, we did several worksheets including one that was a timeline of Dr. King's life.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Johnson's 5th and 6th Graders
