Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at Lincoln was awesome! We had an assembly in the morning. At the assembly, we stood and shared our MLK quote by grade level (K-6) with the whole school. It was fun to practice our quotes and song for the assembly. The third graders' quote was, "Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together," and the fourth graders' quote was, "Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." Both of these quotes were things that MLK said. We also sang a MLK song at the assembly. Click on this link to hear our song. At the assembly, we also had some people from the Crisis Center come and tell us how great we did with our Pack the Stage fundraiser. We "Packed the Stage" in the gym by bringing items that the Crisis Center needed to distribute to people in need. Our school collected a total of 688 pounds of food! In addition to food items, we also collected paper products like diapers, paper towels, and toilet paper.
In the afternoon on MLK day we made cards to raise money for the Crisis Center. We created different types of artwork on the cards from different types of cultures. Each student at Lincoln got to do two different types of artwork on their cards. Some examples of our artwork groups included Hamsa from the Middle East, Rosemaling from Norway, Brush Painting from China, and Origami from Japan. These are just a few examples. There were ten different types of artwork.
